Official opinion released in Planed Parenthood v. Rounds and Crawford v. Marion County

On Tuesday SUNN posted the first information from the courtroom as decisions were released in Planed Parenthood v. Rounds and Crawford v. Marion County. Tonight we have received the official opinions from the justices.

Two Decisions Delivered Today

Decision Released in Crawford v. Marion County

SUNN was in the court room today as decisions were released in Crawford v. Marion County. The court ruled in a split decision of 5-4 in favor of the petitioner and striking down the voting statue. The opinion mostly focused on the unnecessary burden of getting an ID to vote and that the law was most likely targeting a specific majority. The dissenting opinion focused on the partisanship of the case, that if the case is brought by the Democratic National Committee with no specific example. Pugach, Nugent Shine During First Oral Argument

Thursday morning greeted us with a look at the first look at the oral arguments the Justices have agreed to hear this fall. Not really knowing what to expect from petitioner Brett Pugach and respondent Alyssa Nugent in the case of Crawford vs. Marion County Board of Elections, the court seemed on edge as Pugach made his way to the stand. What followed was a heated, well thought out, effort by all parties involved.
Pugach represented the side that believes Indiana’s stringent requirements with regard to their specific photo ID law should be stricken down. Pugach says despite the pressure of being the first case heard, he was able to carry out the game plan that he and Co-counsel Lotfi Sariahmed put together.
“I think that we went in on Thursday and accomplished what we set out to do. I think that we were able to demonstrate to the justices that the law overstepped its bounds by creating costly, burdensome, and unnecessary barriers for many voters,” Pugach said. Read the rest of this entry »

The Supreme Court heard arguments in Crawford v. Marion County Election Board Thursday morning.
Both the petitioner and the respondent were asked numerous questions by the justices during their arguments.

The GOP Responds to the Oral Arguments in Crawford

After oral arguments in the case of Crawford v. Marion County SUNN has received this official statement from Matt Reilly, General Counsel for the GOP.
“The overriding point for this case is that the law is the will of the citizens of Indiana. It was enacted by their democratically elected state government. There was no proof in that court room today that any element of the ID requirement is a ’severe burden,’ which outweighs the Constitutional right of states to hold elections in the efficient manner they see fit.”
Oral Arguments held in Crawford v. Marion County

Thursday morning the Supreme Court held it’s the first oral arguments of the current docket. Stay tuned to SUNN for all of the follow up from this case and the upcoming cases.
The Republican National Committee has filed an Amicus Currie brief in the case of Crawford v. Marion County. The committee is supporting the side of the Marion County Board of Elections.

Respondents for the Marion County Election Board Make Late Night Statement Regarding the Petitioner’s Reply Brief

MCEB’s representatives, Alyssa Nugent and Alex DiGregorio, issued a statement late Monday night in response to the Petitioner’s reply brief in the case of Crawford v. Marion County Election Board which is on the docket for oral arguments this Thursday.
